11 Effective Communication Skills in the Workplace

Leadership Principles: Unlock your leadership potential. Learn more.

Introduction

No nurse should be subjected to violence, assault or obscenities. Regrettably, however, verbal abuse and threatening behaviour sometimes go with the terrain, particularly for nurses working in mental health, general practice and accident and emergency departments. In healthcare, dealing with people who are aggressive, angry, abusive, hostile or confrontational can be a daily occurrence – and it often goes unreported (Harwood, 2017; Sato et al, 2013; Rahim and Shah, 2010).

Difficult situations may have a number of precipitating causes and the more factors at play, the greater the challenge will be. Your own circumstances (for example, whether you are tired or stressed) will also play a part. If you are tired, your patient is angry and in pain, and there are staff shortages on your shift, the encounter will be more difficult than if just one of those factors were present. Nurses are taught to be non-judgmental. Labelling a patient as unpleasant can be unhelpful: rather, think of the interaction as difficult.

Many healthcare encounters are emotionally charged, involving fear and worry, pain and distress – for friends and relatives, as well as patients; this can create a volatile situation. Communication techniques can help de-escalate aggression and can even prevent it from arising in the first place (Webb, 2011).

11 essential workplace communication skills

As a company that spends a lot of time thinking about what effective workplace communication skills are, we’re not here to waste your time with some listicle full of things you already know (“Listening is important!”). Saying “just enough” isn’t everything anymore. Read on to see what we mean!

These are practical, real-world takeaways for interacting in the workplace. Commit to practicing these key communication skills, and you’ll be on the road to more self-aware, effective, and meaningful relationships with others.

1. Knowing when to be silent

“Extroverted leaders have a particular challenge because they talk to think,” writes Roxi Hewertson for The Business Journals. “For them, talking is an important part of processing information and ideas. They risk grabbing too much airtime and shutting others down.”

2. Choosing the appropriate communication channel

“I needed to make some big changes within my organization, but I wasn’t getting anywhere with senior leadership. I’d talked about the issue in my one-on-ones; I’d sent emails and made phone calls; I’d circulated documents. Nothing was sticking. Finally, I put a slide deck together. And the response was like: ‘Ooh, a deck.’ They finally listened and responded to what I had to say.”

When it comes to choosing the right medium for your message, considering your recipients’ preferred channel is only one piece of the puzzle. A few other factors to take into account:

Too many workplaces default to synchronous communication, for example, simply because that’s what humans default to. Yet shifting to even 10-15% fewer meetings (in favor of sending emails or asynchronous video messages instead) could translate to everyone getting a whole lot more room to focus on the real work.

Knowing which communication channel to choose also includes knowing the difference between synchronous vs asynchronous communication — for example, pinpointing the moment a Slack conversation is going off the rails and it’s time to jump on Zoom.

3. Listening well

Underrated communication skill (large)

Underrated communication skills poll (large)

If you’ve been told more than once that you interrupt, or your partner has said some variation of yes, I did tell you about that; you just weren’t paying close attention, or you’ve gotten feedback that you take up too much airtime in meetings, you might want to invest in improving your listening skills.

Knowing how to send information is only half of being a good communicator. Receiving it well is the other part (and the trickier one, at that). Make a concerted effort to become a better, more active listener — it won’t just improve your work life; it’ll have a positive effect on all your relationships.

4. Asking good questions

Making a habit of asking these questions before offering your own point of view will ensure you always have a solid understanding of the big picture — and everyone’s feelings about it.

5. Providing context

According to ARC Leadership Dynamics, people have one of two possible communication styles: We either give and receive information as context communicators (people who want the full story, and all the details that make up the big picture) or content communicators (just the facts, ma’am).

It’s helpful to know which type of communicator you are, as well as which one your recipient is. Does your boss, for example, want to know every little detail? Or do they become annoyed by too much “extra” information?

Especially when you’re disseminating information to a group of people, an effective “TL;DR” at the top of your message will complement the detail and cover your bases when it comes to considering the content and context communicators on your team.

6. Delivering and receiving critical feedback

Feedback is a gift. Knowing how to deliver it effectively and receive it graciously, however, doesn’t come naturally to us. We shy away from offering constructive criticism because we don’t want to rock the boat, and upon receiving it, we get defensive “to protect our character and our sense of competence.”

“Successful people only have two problems dealing with negative feedback. However, they are big problems: (a) they don’t want to hear it from us and (b) we don’t want to give it to them.” — Marshall Goldsmith, What Got You Here Won’t Get You There

Improving Your Leadership Communication

Communication is at the core of effective leadership. If you want to influence and inspire your team, you need to practice empathy and transparency, and understand how others perceive you, through your verbal and non-verbal cues.

To improve your communication skills and become a better leader, begin by assessing your effectiveness so you can identify areas for improvement. Then, set goals and hold yourself accountable by creating a leadership development plan to guide and track your progress.

What Is Social Media Advertising? Boosting Engagement with Social Media

What is social media advertising?

Social media advertising is a digital marketing strategy that enables you to run paid advertisements on social media platforms. This strategy involves paying to promote content on social media sites to reach interested leads and get them to check out your business.

One of the biggest benefits of a paid advertising campaign on social media is that it lets you reach a much larger audience than the people who currently follow you. Your ads aren’t just shown to everybody, either (not unless you want them to). Social media networks know a lot about their users:

With that information, social media ad platforms let you target just about anyone you could want within reason. With social media ads, not only are you finding new audiences, you’re finding qualified audiences, the ones that will most likely be interested in your products and services.

What types of ads can I run?

Facebook

Each of these advertising formats allows you to showcase your products or services in a way that’s most interesting to your audience. You can use video ads to explain your products or carousel ads to show off multiple services. When you combine the variety of ad formats with Facebook’s advanced targeting, it makes this ad platform a great option for your business.

Twitter

Twitter lets you choose between two main ad formats: Automatic promoted tweets and Twitter Ad campaigns. Automatically promoting your tweets takes the first ten tweets you post in a day and promotes them to user feeds. Twitter Ad campaigns, on the other hand, let you customize your ad promotion and choose from a variety of campaign goals (such as clicks, followers, or downloads) to build brand awareness and boost leads.

Instagram

Pinterest

LinkedIn

Snapchat

What is Social Media Advertising?

Social networks utilize user information to serve highly relevant advertisements based on interactions within a specific platform. In many instances, when the target market aligns with the user demographics of a social platform, social advertising can provide huge increases in conversions and sales with lower cost of acquisition.

1. Run your ad campaigns manually.

Pros

Running an ad campaign manually gives you the freedom to invest 100% of your budget into testing out ads and finding the best ones, rather than spending extra money on ad management tools or agency fees.

Plus, taking charge of your own campaigns will inevitably allow you to develop an eye for advertising so that you can learn and improve your campaigns in the future. Instead of letting someone else do the work, you can become an expert yourself and be able to speak the language, even if you do end up hiring outside advertisers down the road.

Cons

Of course, becoming an advertising expert takes time and commitment, which means that the more time you invest in advertising is lost time in other areas of your business. Especially if you are a business owner, spending hours on end mastering advertising might not be conducive to a busy work schedule.

And just because you invest a lot of time in becoming an advertising expert does not mean that your ads will be successful. Especially if you’re just stepping into the advertising world, it may be a gamble to invest all that time and risk not getting the results you want.

Who it’s ideal for

If you’re operating on a tight budget and simply don’t have the means to hire an advertising agency, running your campaigns manually is your best bet — but unless you’re already a seasoned advertiser, you need to be willing to put in the time and effort to learn.

2. Run your ad campaigns via automated software.

Pros

Sometimes on-site ad managers aren’t the most user-friendly, but third-party tools like AdEspresso or Revealbot can make optimizing Facebook ad campaigns and analyzing results much simpler than using Facebook’s Ad Manager.

Cons

And just like manually running your own ad campaign, automated software still poses the risk of spending the money but not getting the results you want. Plus, since you aren’t controlling the entire campaign process, it might be more difficult to identify where the ads manager is falling short.

Who it’s ideal for

Creating a successful campaign is definitely achievable with automated software and minimal invested time, and for business owners with limited resources, this is likely the best option. However, for those who have the budget and want the best ad campaign possible, the easiest option is to turn to the professionals.

3. Hire a managed service to run your ad campaigns.

While this last option is often the most expensive, it’s also the simplest and will likely reap the most benefits. Rather than relying on your own expertise or automated software, hiring a professional is the most reliable option for achieving the results you want.

Pros

Of course, the most obvious advantage of hiring an advertising professional is that they know what they’re doing — it’s their job. As a result, the chances of you getting your desired results are much higher.

Cons

Who it’s ideal for

For those who have the budget to spend and are eager for immediate sales, hiring a managed service is the most ideal solution. And since social media advertising is easily measurable, if your ads aren’t performing up to your standards, then you know exactly who is responsible, and you can always hire a new and better agency.

Top of the Funnel (TOFU)

The top of the funnel is the awareness stage. This stage reaches the broadest, most general audience. TOFU ads should increase awareness and are likely the first impressions of your brand. At this stage, you are showing users that you can offer a solution to their problems.

Middle of the Funnel (MOFU)

The middle of the funnel is the consideration stage. Here, users are learning which solution or product best solves their problem. In this stage, they check out the options you provide them with and are considering how it can benefit them.

Bottom of the Funnel (BOFU)

The bottom of the funnel is the decision stage. At this point, your audience knows who you are, what solutions you offer, and which solution best fits their needs. At the bottom of the funnel, you need to explain why your product is the best solution that they’re going to find.

Consider all three stages of the funnel when mapping out your ads strategy. The ad copy and creatives should be geared towards the specific audience you are targeting. Within each stage of the funnel, you will need to create multiple variations of each ad creative and ad copy. Testing different combinations within your ad set will allow you to see which one is producing the best results.

If creating multiple variations of ad graphics sounds overwhelming, we have the solution for you. No Limit Creatives offers multiple graphics packages to suit your needs. LinkedIn advertising: Bidding options

While many businesses focus their ad strategy on CPC, some do use CPS and CPO. If you’re looking to recruit applicants, for example, CPS and CPO can help your business reach top candidates and fill the opening. For lead generation, however, CPC is a go-to choice.

LinkedIn advertising: Professional management

For many companies, advertising on LinkedIn is a new adventure, which is why it’s helpful to partner with a social media advertising agency. With their experience, as well as advertising expertise, they can help your business build a campaign that allows you to hire top candidates, reach valuable leads, and more.

With a talented and award-winning team of more than 450 digital marketing specialists, WebFX removes the uncertainty, stress, and frustration that can come with advertising on social media. Plus, we partner you with a dedicated account manager, ensuring you always have a familiar point of contact.

Twitter advertising costs

Twitter advertising: Bidding options

While CPC works well for businesses advertising on Twitter, CPE also offers value. When people engage with your ad and your company, whether by commenting or retweeting, it demonstrates the importance of your ad campaign.

For example, that initial engagement can generate brand awareness. It can also result in future, organic interactions between your company and that user. As engagement increases, potential customers move through the buying funnel, which can result in a later purchase or new lead.

Twitter advertising: Professional management

While you can now exceed the 280-character limit on Twitter, that doesn’t change the challenge that comes with advertising on the network. If you want a campaign that makes the most of your social media advertising costs, professional management services can help.

With the hands-on approach of our social media specialists, your company receives a campaign tailored to you. Plus, you have a consistent point-of-contact for chatting about your strategy, reviewing your results, and more.

Unlike other social media advertising agencies, WebFX provides you with a partnership. We invest ourselves in your success and measure our performance by your results, which is one reason why our client recommendation score is 488% higher than the industry average.

Social media adverteren uitbesteden

Social media adverteren is keuzes maken.

How to Quit Your Job: An HBR Guide

How to Quit a Job

How to Quit Your Job: An HBR Guide

People everywhere are thinking about quitting their jobs. But how do you decide if this is the right decision for you? And if you do decide to quit, how do you give your notice and leave gracefully? This article collects HBR’s best advice on the topic and covers everything from how to tell your boss to how much notice to give.

By now you’ve probably heard about the so-called “Great Resignation.” In the last few months, survey after survey have shown that people everywhere are thinking about quitting their jobs. It seems that the global pandemic has caused many of us to reconsider what we want from our careers (and our employers) — and the strong job market has granted us the freedom to make changes.

If you’re one of the millions of people who are considering giving notice, you’re probably wondering the best way to do it. Fortunately, this is a topic that HBR has covered quite a bit over the years, so I dug into our archive to surface our best advice.

Follow an exit strategy.

Get the timing right.

You don’t want to leave when you are most needed in your role. Quitting during the holiday season, for example, might be inconvenient enough for your boss to resent you. The key is to plan ahead. Think about how quitting will affect the company and determine when the best time to quit is.

Warn your manager about your impending resignation.

You don’t want your resignation to appear out of the blue. Talk to your boss weeks in advance of your resignation. Let them know about your grievances, demands, or ambitions. This way, when you’re ready for the conversation, it won’t feel like a jarring transition from satisfied employee to disgruntled one, catching your boss by surprise. It makes the conversation much easier to have.

Communicate with your future employer.

If you have your next job secured, speak to your future employer and iron out the details of the transition. Determine how long you have before you are required to start, and ask for more time well in advance if you think you might take a little longer to properly phase out your current job. It’s important to keep your next boss in the loop as well.

What People Remember

Keep in mind that the way you behave when leaving a job will create a lasting impression that can impact how co-workers and former managers remember you long term. Handle yourself with nothing less than the highest standard of professionalism regardless of the reason your are leaving.

If you were in a bad situation, there is no reason to spread negativity on your way out the door. Doing so will send more of a message about you than the place where you worked. Instead, make sure that anyone you used to work with can only say that you conducted yourself appropriately and respectfully to the end. This will go a long way toward preserving relationships that may be beneficial to you in the future and ensuring that your reputation stays positive in the business community.

11 Best Practices for Successful B2B Email Marketing in 2022

b2b email marketing example asana customer nurturing

The “right contact” approach

One of the most popular cold email strategies is asking the recipient if they’re the right point of contact. This approach has been leveraged for many years by sales professionals because it’s been proven to work.

The “right contact” approach is a great strategy especially when reaching out to senior executives at a company. (Steli Efti recently talked about this in a piece about enterprise sales pitfalls and the role that CEOs play in the sales cycle.) When taking this approach, you can establish buy-in or at least intrigue from a CEO, and then your request will be delegated down the organization to a more appropriate contact. The advantage is that when you engage a senior team member, they become connected to the outcome and can help you move the deal forward.

I also reached out to [Colleague 1] and [Colleague 2] to try and lock down someone at your company in this space. If you’re the appropriate person to chat with, let me know and I’d love to schedule some time to talk about [Your Company].

The problem-focused approach

b2b-email-templates-problem-focused-approach

If you’re selling something, you’re obviously trying to solve a problem. The problem-focused approach to cold email strives to catch a recipient’s attention by revealing their problem and then asserting that you can solve it. Like so:

Hey [First Name] – As an entrepreneur, managing payroll is probably at the bottom of your list of things you want to be spending your time on, especially when your company is growing as much as I read in [article/software/etc].

[Your Company] helps organizations like yours focus on what you do best while we manage the payroll. We’ve helped companies save money on accounting fees, free up time and find budget inefficiencies that were being overlooked.

The email template above focuses heavily on the pain points of payroll and how the sender’s company could take those burdens off the recipient’s plate. By placing the problem front and center in the email, the salesperson forces the recipient to confront the problem and decide whether it actually resonates with them. This template is most successful for organizations selling a painkiller rather than a vitamin. A vitamin is a nice-to-have (but not must-have) product while a painkiller can have a meaningful and measurable impact on a business.

What is B2B Email Marketing?

Strictly speaking, B2B email marketing is the practice of sending emails from one business entity to another with the purpose of selling products and services. Emails are usually sent from the marketing or sales team and are addressed to the decisionmakers in target companies. Such decisionmakers can include department managers, procurement, and anyone else with influence.

One of the objectives of B2C email marketing is convincing people to buy something right now. Whether that’s a toy for a birthday, new seasonal clothing, or the latest beauty product, you’re asking the target customer to choose you over a competitor. Unless a customer needs something regardless of marketing can’t wait, offering a promotion is often the best way to sell things. For many of us, waiting until there’s a sale and then stocking up has become a way of life.

On the other hand, B2B email marketing is done a bit differently. While promotions are occasionally used, most B2B buyers need to make an informed decision. Smaller examples of this might include choosing the right company laptop for employees who travel or work from home. This level of buying decision is similar to the consumer process, except it needs to pass the procurement process.

Purchasing large machinery or an office full of printers and copiers is much more complicated. As a rule, the larger the purchase the more corporate bureaucracy has to be dealt with. In addition, some things like production equipment must meet certain standards to be effective. To that end, B2B email marketing does a lot more with providing information. When the buyer determines a product is perfect, they’ll call sales and negotiate a price.

Deliver business value with a human touch

When most people sit down at their desks, something strange happens. They stop being their usual self and turn into their business self. Your business self is rational and goal-oriented. You are focused on getting tasks done and interacting with others in a highly professional manner. You use words like, ‘touch base’, ‘add value’ and ‘best in class’. Transforming into your business self is not a bad thing. In fact, it’s necessary.

But a lot of B2B email marketing campaigns fail to excite their audiences because they focus too much on the rational business points without adding the human, emotional aspects that are necessary to build a genuine relationship.

Are you ready to kickstart your B2B email campaign?

I’m Paulius, SEO Manager at MailerLite. I’ve helped many businesses with their SEO, from small e-shops to large news portals. Unlike SEOs constant changes, my music taste hasn’t changed since 7th grade. Which makes me wonder, has my taste been that good since then or has it always been bad? 5 B2B Best Practices to Consider

1. Get notified when a lead fills an important form

2. Personalize your B2B email sequence

3. Use dynamic content

4. Optimize your B2B email subject line

5. Automate your B2B email marketing campaign

It is essential to be up to date when it comes to B2B email statistics. It helps you to know your market and how to improve it based on numbers. It also allows you to rate your B2B email campaigns based on reference statistics.

Reading the figures in this table is not tricky. If we take the financial consulting sector as an example, we can see that the open rate in total is about 11.50%, the clickthrough rate is 7.72%, and the bounce rate is 12,64%.

Will You Be My Copywriter

How to find a good copywriter?

Copywriting has become and extremely popular profession in recent times. There are more and more advertisements both from the freelance copywriters and agencies in the press and the internet. Authors offer a great variety of styles and text types. How to find a quality copywriter, who will handle all your content needs. Read the article below and find out.

Search in the right places

There are web-sites where copywriters add their advertisement. Portals for freelancers such as Fiverr and Upwork are such places, where without hassle we may find copywriters for our business.

Most of the offers come from the beginners – copywriters, who make their first steps in the profession, therefore we may consider to search elsewhere to find somebody more experienced.

Copywriting agencies

One of the possibilities is to start cooperating with the copywriting agency. Each company of such status has to ensure high quality of their services as well as provide comfort and transparency during the whole process of cooperation.

In case of well-established agencies we may have a certainty that our content was created by a professional copywriter. We may choose an agency which suit best our expectations and content needs. Good quality of service provided by agencies usually mean that our cost will be higher than those of hiring a freelancer.

LinkedIn

To lower the cost of employment we may decide to search for copywriter single-handedly. LinkedIn portal may be a help in this task. Professionals from many industries place their advertisement there, copywriters as well. Each individual’s profile act as on-line curriculum vitae. We may easily verify the experience and skills of the person, we consider for hiring.

how to find a good copywriter

Personal web-sites of copywriters

Experienced copywriters usually have their own web-sites where they advertise their services. On those web-sites we may check the portfolio of their work as well as read all the recommendations and references.

The easiest way to find out about copywriting professionals is to use general internet browser. This simple task tells much about copywriter’s content optimization and SEO skills. The potential copywriter should be highly knowledgeable about SEO tactics to ensure that the content is accessible to wider audience.

Groups on Facebook

On Facebook there are many groups directed at copywriters and creative professionals, hence it is quite popular place, where companies and individuals publish their job ads. There we can find a great number of copywriter specializing in different fields. It is worth to be cautious, while searching on the Facebook, because price range for all advertised there services is very large and the quality of written texts also varies.

On Facebook we may encounter both experienced specialists and complete laymen. Still there is a benefit of this situation – we may hire somebody for prices lower than those offered by copywriting agencies or those offered by copywriters with strong personal brand.

How to find a good copywriter

Traits of highly effective copywriter

How to find the best specialist in copywriting? Not every individual is able to write a good content. There are some characteristics of good copywriter to look for. Firstly, he must be inquisitive and like to ask many questions – good text must be based on strong foundation of extensive knowledge related to the client, company and product. Your copywriter should understand your core market. Copywriter asking lots of questions about our brand and our goals shall carry out all his tasks efficiently and professionally.

Second factor is the knowledge. The key element of content writing is the research. To produce good quality copy copywriter must possess a lot of knowledge related to the topic and be aware of all related issues.

The third characteristics of a good copywriter is connected to his area of specialization – he should be a specialist in the field he is writing about. Copywriting as a profession covers many subjects and types of texts. To get quality texts from your copywriter you must chose a person, who already is a specialist in the type of content, you need. It would be counterproductive to hire a creative writer specializing in beauty and style to produce highly technical texts about programming.

The next trait of a good copywriter is flexibility and adaptability. Every brand has own, unique tone of voice to communicate with it’s audience. The copywriter should remember about uniqueness of each brand’s messages and should be able to adjust own writing style to it. The brand voice tone should stay consistent and coherent.

And finally, a good copywriter should have a broad knowledge about modern copywriting. The mere writing skill may not be sufficient. Your copywriter should produce content, which is marketing-driven, with tone of voice well adjusted to the indented audience. He should know all important SEO tactics to ensure your texts appear in search results on high positions.

Think twice about your text and it’s length, as well as your goals and your target audience. The more precisely you determine your expectations the easier you find the right person for the task.

Always check the portfolio and the references. By checking the portfolio of your possible copywriter you may find out if the content he creates matches your expectations. In case the writer doesn’t put any texts on public display on his web-site, you may decide to write privately with request for samples or portfolios.

References allow you to see the if other companies were satisfied with the cooperation with your chosen copywriter. Were all his tasks made on time? Was the communication effective? Some questions should be asked before important decisions and hiring.

Finding a good copywriter, who will match all your needs and expectations is not easy. Be ready to spend some time on searching and be patient. Hiring a good copywriter should bring results with time, your audience will read valuable and engaging content.

1. They should be well-versed in your industry.

As in any field, in copywriting there are people who are specialists. Some writers spend a career writing pieces directed toward opportunity seekers. Others specialize in health supplements or technical products. If your product is a software program that auto repair shops can use to help diagnose electronic issues in engines, you want someone who knows something about the language in that area and what will appeal to owners of auto repair shops. You’ll probably have less success with someone who is mostly experienced writing copy about tools for knitting and crocheting – for an audience of craft enthusiasts.

This isn’t to say that some copywriters can’t adapt to a variety of audiences. But do get samples of the writer’s work and see if anything sounds right to you. If you’re not sure the writer can fit your needs, but you’d like to find out, ask him or her to write a short sample to your specifications and see if you like the results. You may have to pay for the writer’s time, but it will be worth it in the long run.

7 Top Social Media Monitoring Tools and Why You Need Them

What is social media monitoring?

By monitoring this data, you’re doing research that is both quantitative (metrics and analytics) and qualitative (inspiration for posts and strategies). You’ll get information that can help you determine things like:

For brands, social monitoring is an essential part of being a good social citizen, and succeeding on social, period. For instance, you wouldn’t launch into a high-pressure sales pitch (or informative lecture, or even a stand up routine) to a new customer who’s just walked in the door. You’d listen first, and at least figure out what they’re looking for or why they’re in your office.

Note: You’ve probably also heard of social media listening, which is the next step you’ll want to take after social media monitoring. Social listening involves not just gathering and analyzing the metrics, but taking action. Take part in the conversation, and turn your intelligence into audience insights. Read our article about social media listening tools over here.

7 brand social media monitoring tools

For brands and businesses, social media monitoring goes beyond just typing your own name into the search bar on Instagram or Twitter. This is why we’ve compiled this list of our favorite brand monitoring tools for making the task faster, easier, and—dare we say it—more fun? (Ok, ok, you don’t have to give me that look.)

1. Hootsuite

Arguably the easiest social monitoring tool to use on this list, Hootsuite’s customizable search streams will monitor any social platform you like so that you can see what’s going on at a glance. Zero in on essential topics, trends, and social mentions based on keywords, hashtags, locations, and specific users.

Search for any topic or keyword, and filter by date, demographics, location, and more. You’ll be able to identify thought leaders or brand advocates, understand the perception of your brand in the market, and get immediate alerts if and when your mentions spike (for good or for bad.)

Hootsuite Insights can tell you a lot about your audience — and how they feel about you. It’s only available to enterprise users, but if you’re serious about social listening, Insights is the only tool you’ll need.

2. Nexalogy

Nexalogy’s top-tier data visualizations set it apart: interactive timelines, geolocation-based heat maps, lexical cluster maps that show common patterns of topic. Plus the “basic” stuff that would take a human being weeks to figure out, like popular keywords and most active accounts.

3. Mentionlytics

4. Reputology

For customer-facing businesses, a bad review can be a real blow if it isn’t dealt with correctly and quickly. Reputology lets you monitor major review sites such as Yelp, Google, and Facebook reviews from one dashboard.

6. Reddit Keyword Monitor Pro

With 430 million average monthly active users, Reddit is an often-overlooked social platform where conversation is often in-depth and honest. This tool allows you to monitor the site’s 138,000 active communities for the conversations you care about.

Social Media: What Now?

Social media monitoring is often confused with similar-sounding (and a few similar-meaning) terms, including social media tracking. Simply put, social media monitoring is keeping an eye on the conversations already happening related to key terms that you search for, such as your brand name, tagline, and product names.

So how exactly do you become a fly on the digital wall of the web? The first step in effective social listening is to create a list of keywords to monitor. Depending on your goals, you may want to monitor conversations about your brand, products, services, industry, competitors, and competitors’ products. You could also monitor keywords associated with recent marketing campaigns or phrases used by people who might be in need of your product. For example, Febreze may monitor terms such as “pet odor” and “the smell test.”

Once you have your list, you’re ready to start monitoring. Most social media networks have a search feature like #tags and @tags, making it easy to bring up just the results you want. Unfortunately, using these tools manually has some potential problems.

Are You Listening? The 19 Best Social Media Monitoring Tools

If they tagged your social media profile in their posts, you could check your notifications. If they didn’t, maybe you could search on each social media platform every time you want to find out. Sounds tedious? Here’s a better way:

There’s a great deal of wonderful social media tools out there. Among them are tools built specifically to help you pick out relevant conversations on social media — social media monitoring tools. Some of these tools allow you to monitor multiple social media profiles on the different social media platforms from a single place. There are even some that let you monitor social media trends and keywords.

On top of scheduling and collaborating on social media content, you can also respond to comments and messages from an inbox and monitor hashtags, keywords, and your competitors on social media and the web.

The remaining social media monitoring tools are more pricey than those above. I have not had the opportunity to try them out myself (as they do not provide free trials). I’ve selected them based on reviews and their brand name. If you have used any of them before, it’ll be great to hear your experience.

How does social media monitoring work?

Social media monitoring can be performed by using SMM tools and works by continuously crawling and indexing sites, via keywords, some are crawled in real time, such as Twitter. After the sites are indexed, they can be searched to find mentions, comments and other texts that include the opinions, and sentiment on specific products, brands, companies, etc.

Social media monitoring is not only for social media channels. In fact, SMM tools can also crawl various types of websites which include review sites, news sites, RSS feeds, forums and blogs. Usually, monitoring tools use some kind of search string that the customer writes to find mentions of specific words and expressions on those pages. You can find some of these tools online.

Collecting random data generated from social media can empower you to have some the following advantage.

You must choose monitoring tools of which you think could match your business goal. The SMM tool will crawl the internet and collect a number of mentions and information. Then the next step is to analyze the data gathered. But what you should do with the information gathered?

  • Observe related search keywords to find out which words are trending.
  • Evaluate your customer emotions towards your brand. One way to do so is by using sentiment analysis that answers the question “What do people think or feel about the brands, products, and services?”

The areas you should monitor on social media

Brand Terms

Sometimes, there are instances that people may forget to include the @ or # when directly mentioning your brand. For twitter, to locate conversations that may have slipped off your radar, use the advanced search operators that offer a much-extended range of results.

Customer Needs

According to Sprout Social Q2, 2016 Index 89% of social messages are being ignored. Your business should take it as an opportunity. Make sure that you are not just there to listen to your customer sentiments, but also take time to consider their needs and respond to them.

Customer Sentiment

You’ve heard that the greatest ideas sometimes come from the customers’ opinion. You may or may not agree with that statement, but everyone ought to agree that customers opinion is very important. Most of the time your customer’s voice are louder than what you are trying to say about your business. You may say that your business is the best customer support company in the whole country, but your customer opinion may perceive your business as the worse customer support company. This can happen to your business if you did not properly monitor your customer feedback. The more customer concern left unanswered the more customer will be going to hurt your business. In contrast, the faster you can adapt to accommodate customer needs, the stronger your company’s reputation.

Competitors

Every company aims to be ahead of their competition. Social listening and monitoring are important to refine your social strategy. Begin by benchmarking and tracking competitors activity and updates to gather info on:

You also need to be careful about reaching out to the followers of your competitors. It is better to drive a smooth relationship and perhaps not directly to avoid being perceived as desperate and aggressive.

This way, you can borrow anywhere between $20,000 and $5 million for as long as a 10-year term. The SBA’s 7(a) loan program is attractive to many small business owners for its below-market interest rate. If you apply through Funding Circle’s network of lending partners, you’ll see that the interest rate is currently set at Prime + 2.75% (currently 6%). 1 Payments are made monthly and you won’t face any fees for early repayment. What is a small business loan?

A small business loan is a type of business finance that helps to ensure that companies have enough money to cover daily operating costs. A small business loan offers you a convenient, low-cost way to finance your business activities. This type of loan can be used for almost any business purpose, such as boosting cash flow, purchasing equipment, recruiting staff and covering unexpected bills.

Both secured and unsecured small business loans are available for business owners in the UK. Unsecured loans are typically smaller amounts at a higher cost with shorter repayment terms. However, if you require a larger loan, offering an asset as security against the loan may enable you to secure more funds at better rates.

What is the difference between a business loan and a personal loan?

Business loans can only be used for business purposes and company purchases. Examples of this include using your loan to fund business expansion, or buy new stock and equipment. A personal loan differs to this because it is intended for personal use. Lenders will usually impose restrictions on personal loans that state they can’t be utilised for business use and vice versa.

A small business loan is no different from any other type of business finance. The credit provider gives you money upfront, and then you repay it, including any interest and fees over an agreed timeframe.

Each type of loan can vary in structure and repayment mechanism. For example, some allow you to draw down funds as and when you need it. These are called lines of credit or revolving credit facilities. They are much more flexible and work similarly to a credit card, paying interest only when you use it.

Depending on the loan you choose, you may be required to offer a company or personal asset to secure the loan. Failure to fulfil your repayment terms may result in the lender seizing your assets. You must, therefore, consider this option carefully.

Term Loans

Term loans are one of the most popular types of small business loans. If you’ve ever taken out a mortgage or financed a vehicle purchase, then you’re probably familiar with the mechanics of a term loan. Term loans are delivered via a lump-sum of capital from a lender and paid off in fixed installments according to a schedule until you pay back the principal plus any applicable interest (and any fees). Repayment periods can vary from short term (12 months or less) to medium term (1 -3 years) to long term (3+ years). Term loans are typically secured by a lien on your business assets (a right for the lender to seize those assets if you default on the loan) and may require a personal guarantee, which means your personal assets may be liable if your business defaults on the loan. One of the perks of a term loan is that the interest rate, which could be either fixed or variable, tends to be competitive and lower than other types of small business financing. This is especially true when you consider that you may be repaying the loan over a number of years. Business owners have flexibility with regards to how they can use the funds. For instance, one could use a small business term loan to expand to a new location, replenish inventory, or hire new employees.

Freelance writing tips

I have every post I’ve ever written on this blog. If you go and read the first few posts I wrote and compare them to now, you’ll notice an improvement. It’s without question that writing every day will improve your writing.

Develop a writing process to improve your odds of long-term writing success.

Freelance writers with an established writing routine tend to be more productive than those taking an ‘I write whenever I feel like it’ approach to content creation. Business owners don’t just open their shop whenever they feel like. If you want to build a long list of happy writing clients, developing your writing process is essential.

You need to be specific about the time you will commit to writing. When are you most productive? After breakfast, or in the evening? Once you know this, you can plan your days more effectively, setting aside time for family, rest, and recreation.

You might want to work hard, but you shouldn’t run yourself into the ground. Set aside time for small breaks and a more extended lunch break. If the weather’s nice, go for a ten-minute walk. Finding time to relax is vital for keeping your mind fresh.

Freelance Writing for Beginners

As a beginner, it can be hard to know where to get started in the freelance writing world. You know that you’ll write for a number of clients and publications, but you aren’t sure how to start that process.

Step 3: Register your business: You can either register your business as an LLC and open a business bank account to protect your assets, or you can opt to receive 1099s from companies and work from your personal bank account.

Step 5: Pitch potential clients: Now it’s time to get to the grind. Look at job boards or contact the companies directly. Either way, you should send several pitches a day to get started.

Freelance writing isn’t always an easy and glamorous job like the Facebook ads make it seem. It requires a lot of hard work, organization, and persistence. However, if you stay on the grind, and work with the end game in mind — like those long walks on the Saint Tropez beaches — you can eventually build a brand where companies are coming directly to you and willing to pay you what you’re worth.

If this is you, then I want you to know that I was in your shoes once. Not too long ago – a little over a year ago – I was at a place where I was reading soo much about freelance writing, that I didn’t know what to believe.

To get you started, I’ve come up with seven tips to help you out. This all requires taking action on your part, however. If you don’t just do it and get out there, you’ll never know how much you can potentially succeed as a pro writer.

Thanks for sharing your experience and skills needed for growth and success in life. I love writing and editing but I finding it hard to start. I am highly motivated and inspired by your write-up. You’re a plus to our generation.Reply to Edosa

I’m a teacher of English Language & Literature. I recently started blogging about education. It’s so exciting and interesting. I’m good at it and I thought, “Why don’t I become a freelance writer?” But I had a big fear, I didn’t know how and where to start, and your article just helped me to cope with everything. Now I have found my clients and start writing for them. For the same beginners as me I want to advise not to be afraid to try yourself in this matter, if you try your best, you will succeed! I also would like to advise useful freelancer tools, such as https://www.hubspot.com/blog-topic-generator – which will help you when you are short on post ideas and Uncheck.com – great plagiarism checker helps to be sure of the originality of your content. All the best!Reply to Nancy

“Make A Pitch Everyday” ! If I could impart one piece of advice to freelance writers it would be this. To make it you need to market every single day. A freelance writer without clients is just a hobbyist. Marketing on social media, query letters, sample content, your website, networking — all of these methods are necessary. Jon PenningtonReply to Jon

Elna, I wish I had found your blog earlier…like almost a year earlier. I probably wouldn’t have had to go back to my corporate job if I’d found you earlier. That’s one of my mistakes and I hope others don’t make the same one. Thank you for this post and your blog!Reply to Lisa

May be you forgot to included all freelnce writers must included guaranteed for reevision. I always did it so the client get what they want. if they are dislike with my job, there is always revision option.Reply to Shiq4

Great post as usual, Elna! The first tip is absolutely essential, and I’m glad you listed it at the top of the list! I’ve had a few different newer freelancers ask me why they aren’t getting any responses, and what they are doing wrong with their pitches. They had a few issues with their approaches, but the main problem was how little they were pitching. Generally, they would send out 1 to 2 pitches a day, and then not do anymore marketing work. They sat there, waiting…and waiting…and waiting. Needless to say, they needed to pitch MORE! Again, great post!Reply to Alexia

Hi Elna, Thanks for these tips. I’m just starting out as a freelance writer and I have my own blog, but it’s quite intimidating being out in the big wide world of the Internet. But with these tips I feel like I have more of a plan and will just keep pushing on and see what happens. Cheers, DianaReply to Diana

Thank you for the information. I’m a new author and still learning the ropes. Instead if working on my next novel I’m trying to keep my blog afloat by posting three times a week. the blog is new and just this last weekend I made the decision what I truly want to write about. I have a book signing event coming up and I’ve been reading and researching the proper way to wrote a press release. Day number two and I’m completely overwhelmed. Not only am I trying to promote my own boom but my husbands as well. Does it get any easier? Loom through your list there are several things I need to work on. Thank you again for posting this.Reply to Charity

Hi Charity! That’s great you are on track. I’m not an author but I know a few freelance writers that are authors! It may seem overwhelming but just take it one step at a time! It does get easier once you understand the process and expectations! Good luck.Reply to Elna

Hi Elna! Great post. I’m struggling with a few of these actually. I definitely need to work on #1 and #5. I enjoy interacting with fellow freelance writers when I get the chance but don’t always get the time to be an active part of the community. I’m always grateful for your shares and shoutouts on social! It’s been inspiring to watch your journey over the last 6 months (when I first found your blog!). This has been queued up in my Buffer btw 🙂Reply to Jennee

It might be safe or comfortable to do what you have always done, or to do what all others have done before you, but if you are going to leap ahead of the herd and feast on greener grasses, you’re going to have to break some eggs, shake a tail feather, go for the golden ring! In a nutshell, these mixed metaphors are trying to tell you that you need to do what hasn’t been done or do what has been done DIFFERENTLY.

Believe

It is easy to believe you can’t make any money writing, because with writing, everyone is doing it…blogging, microblogging, and self-publishing. So the first thing you have to do is BELIEVE that you can make money writing. The second thing you need to do is BELIEVE your writing is worth money, a lot of money, because it is uniquely yours. But you still have to build your career as a paid freelance writer brick by brick, just like a house.

There are freelance writers without websites and social media pages, but more and more DO have their own websites. I build websites for individuals and they are older professionals who already have been published in print or on other outlets. They have been told by their agent or their publishing company that they have to have a website. You need to at least go to WordPress or Tumblr or Blogger and start a free site. Start blogging. Get yourself comfortable online.

Start Contributing

I’m sorry, but sometimes you have to start from 0, and that means self-publishing on your lonesome on your little-known website, and then from there, find websites that allow you to contribute for little or no compensation. I’ve found some just from dumb luck, like Engaged Marriage and here on Lifehack, but I also found websites that need freelance writers by following where other writers publish their works.

And if you want to get paid, says Professor Rich Martin of Illinois University, a professor and freelance writer, you must remember everyone has opinions and opinions are free, so doing something more akin to reporting on a subject with market value is the way to go. Before you pitch a story, you must understand the value of the pitch to the outlet itself, adds Professor Mike Taylor of Henderson State University. So find some outlets that pay you to contribute, but don’t underestimate. You are still applying for a job. Respect that. You have to be able to point to previously published work, or what can be called an online clip file or portfolio. The more outlets that have published you independently (even if they didn’t pay you), the more help you’ll get to land jobs that will pay.

Blog regularly

If you’re just starting out as a freelancer, you’ll need all the practice you can get. Starting your own blog is a great way to demonstrate your skills and improve your writing at the same time. If you’re new to the profession it’s likely you don’t have many samples under your belt, but blogging is an easy and quick way to create samples you can include in a pitch.

There are no limitations on what you can write about on your own blog, but if you’re looking to specialise in a certain niche, it’s a good idea to showcase your knowledge of the subject as much as possible. If you’re promoting your content well on social media and you’re consistent with posting, you’ll also find blogging regularly could help you land clients.

Youness Bermime, a professional content writer and owner of WritersDo, says: “Your blog (if managed well) can attract visitors, who, in turn, can become clients. It is a win-win situation for you: you show your skills and gain more popularity.”

Set up Google alerts on keywords and topics you want to write about.

Find a specific topic that interests you and follow experts and brands in that field on social media and in news stories when you. 8 Tips for New Freelance Writers

Becoming a freelance writer means many things. It means hard work, independent income, pursuing your passion, and constantly developing your skills. There’s a lot to it, but there’s no reason to fear it. You’ll be delighted at the opportunities that will show up for you once you get started as a freelance writer and find your writing niche. But first, you need to make sure you know how to get started on the path to success. To help you set a plan in place, we’ve put together some of our best advice for new freelance writers.

The first step to becoming a truly successful freelance writer is managing your time. There are several ways to do this, and the steps you take will vary depending on your personality. However, there are a few basic things you should keep in mind:

  • Make lists – The Type-A person knows them well, but even if that’s not your style, in this case, it’s probably a good idea. Making a list of each writing job you need to finish, the research you must accomplish, and the other daily tasks that you can’t ignore should be top of the list for what you need to be a successful freelance writer.
  • Don’t multitask – We’ve all done it, but scientists have proven that multitasking can actually cause you to lose up to 40% of the time you could be productive. In reality, our brains can only focus on one thing at a time, so multitasking is ultimately hours of our brains starting and stopping. In the long run, this usually causes more problems instead of increasing productivity.
  • Track your time – With a time tracker or other similar program, you can keep track of deadlines, how much you work, and what you’ve accomplished. This is an essential step to making every second count in your freelance business.

2. Research the Industry

Some people have the advantage of a degree or certificate that introduced them to the ins and outs of freelance writing. I came out of university with a Theatre Degree. But thanks to the Internet, there is a flurry of information already available online and websites ready to help you get started. I spent an entire winter just researching what it meant to be a freelance writer, what kind of outlets existed for my writing, and what the process was for getting published. I met with the only freelance writer I knew to learn how she got started. As it turns out, the path she took (ie. writing for newspapers) had no appeal to me, but at least I learned this was an option.

Learning about the infamous “query letter” was my first big “aha!” moment when I was researching how to enter the freelance market. Most publications, especially those that pay for material, don’t want to receive a complete, unsolicited article. Instead, they want you to pitch your idea in the form of a query letter.

Editors are busy and likely won’t read a full article, but they can make time to browse through a well-written query. If an editor likes your idea, this also gives him or her some space to suggest possible angles and fulfill the current needs of the magazine. See this piece on How to Write a Query Letter for the specifics. Keep track of your queries so that you know where and when you submitted them.

How to be a Paid Freelance Writer

It also means you need to think about what they are typing into search boxes on Google and LinkedIn and other places. What key terms are they looking for? Make sure you highlight those in all of your profiles.

Step 9: Marketing Your Freelance Writing Business

When you work for yourself, you are in the sales business. You have to sell yourself and your skills all the damn time at the start. Then, hopefully, you’ll start getting more people who come to you through referrals and word of mouth, and you won’t have to sell quite as much.

Building Your Marketing Mix

Screenshot 2019 01 21 08.51.39

So when I say marketing, here’s what I do (and maybe you should too):

Action step: Set time aside each week, put it in your calendar, and devote it to marketing yourself until it becomes second nature and just what you do.

I try to focus during my marketing block on stuff that is going to result in getting clients. Reading a blog post about how you should be marketing does not count as marketing outreach. You actually have to do stuff.

Step 10: Figuring Out Your Freelance Writing Rates

In my experience, two big problems give people anxiety when it comes to pricing:

The main thing out of that list that I’d highlight is having a baseline floor rate. Even though I don’t charge by the word but by the project, I’ve figured out essentially what my bottom line per word rate is to make a project work.

Action step: Figure out your baseline writing rate (and stick to it).

I have this number written down on a post-it note that sits on my desk. Anytime I get an offer to write, I compare the rate to my post-it note number. If it’s below that, I counter offer at a higher price. If they say no, I walk away and find the next opportunity.

I spent a lot of time when I was first writing undercharging myself. I honestly didn’t realize people could get hundreds or thousands of dollars for freelance writing work until I started connecting with higher-level writers who did.

Step 11: Consider Additional Beneficial Skills You Can Learn

So if you develop SEO skills to go along with your writing, you’re making yourself more valuable to your client. And you’re making it easier to get work and charge more money because of your increased skillset.

How to Write Dialogue: Formatting, Examples, & Tips

If you stick to one rule the whole time — i.e. if you only use ‘said,’ or you finish every dialogue line with an action beat — you’ll quickly wear out readers. See how unnaturally it plays out in the example below with Sophie and Ethan:

Writing Dialogue In Fiction: 7 Easy Steps

Speech gives life to stories. It breaks up long pages of action and description, it gives us an insight into a character, and it moves the action along. But how do you write effective dialogue that will add depth to your story and not take the reader away from the action?

Getting speech right is an art but, fortunately, there are a few easy rules to follow. Those rules will make writing dialogue easy – turning it from something static, heavy and un-lifelike into something that shines off the page.

Better still, dialogue should be fun to write, so don’t worry if we talk about ‘rules’. We’re not here to kill the fun. We’re here to increase it. So let’s look at some of these rules along with dialogue examples.

How To Write Dialogue In 7 Simple Steps:

Basic Dialogue Rules All Writers Should Follow

Before we get into the actual formatting and styles of writing dialogue (along with some tips for making sure it’s good dialogue), let’s go over some of the common and universal rules for writing dialogue in any book genre.

  1. Each speaker gets a new paragraph. Every time someone speaks, you show this by creating a new paragraph. Yes, even if your characters are only saying one word, they get new paragraphs.
  2. Each paragraph is indented. The only exception for this is if it’s the start of a chapter or after a scene break, where the first line is never indented, including with dialogue.
  3. Punctuation for what’s said goes inside the quotation marks. Any time the punctuation is a part of the person speaking, they go inside the quotes so the reader knows how the dialogue is said.
  4. Long speeches with several paragraphs don’t have end quotations. You’ll see more on this below, but overall, if one character is speaking for so long they have separate paragraphs, the quotation marks on the end are removed, but you start the next paragraph with them.
  5. Use single quotes if the person speaking is quoting someone else. If you have a character who says, “Man, don’t you love it when girls say, ‘I’m fine’?”, the single quotes indicate what someone else says.
  6. Skip the small talk and focus on important information only. Unless that small talk is relevant for character development, skip it and get to the point, this isn’t real life and will actually feel more fake if you have too much.

Know that characters don’t always mean what they say

Just as “I’m good” in response to a friendly “How are you?” might not actually mean that you’re good, characters can also say things that don’t reflect the truth. Creating dialogue that places emphasis on what’s not said (i.e. the subtext) can make your story that much more realistic and compelling.

How to Write Dialogue | Example of Show, Don

While Sophie claims she hasn’t been obsessing over this project all night, the actions in between her words indicate that there’s nothing on her mind but work. In weaving personality traits into the conversation through action beats, rather than describing Sophie as hardworking or using a “she lied” dialogue tag, you give readers a chance to organically get to know the characters

Remember that less is more

Our final tip is more of a reminder than anything. With a “less is more” mentality, you can cut out unnecessary bits of dialogue (the “boring bits” from tip #1) and focus on making sure the dialogue you do keep matters. Good writing is intentional and purposeful — it always strives to keep the story going and readers engaged — so the importance lies in quality rather than quantity.

One particular point we haven’t really addressed is repetition. If used well (i.e. with clear intentions), repetition is a literary device that can help you build motifs and flesh out themes in your writing. But when you’re writing dialogue and find yourself repeating well-established pieces of information, it might be a good time to step back and revise your work.

How to Write Dialogue | Example of Unnecessary Repetition

Having Sophie mention that they’ve been working together since the transfer feels repetitive without really adding anything to the conversation. Instead of rephrasing this bit of info, consider cutting Sophie’s line altogether or adding something else, like “I can’t believe we’re talking about this again”, to increase the tension between the characters.

The point is, a good dialogue is often a place where character dynamics can play out. Including needless phrasings or repetitions may decrease the strength of that interaction, and waste valuable space in a scene. If you’re verging on repeating yourself, it’s better to write less and let the readers infer more.

We know that writing dialogue can be intimidating, especially if you don’t have much experience with it. But that should never keep you from including it in your work! Just remember that the more you practice — especially with the help of these tips — the better you’ll get.
